Nepal is in the middle of getting the groundwork right for development

Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon was in Nepal this past week on a four-day visit as UNDP’s Goodwill Ambassador with UNDP Administrator Helen Clark. With a degree in development studies, the heir to Norwegian throne is actively involved in promoting Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). During his stay in Nepal, he interacted with sexual minorities, addressed the Indigenous People’s Caucus, visited a maternity clinic in Kamdhi, Banke, and met former Maoist combatants, besides holding discussions with the President. He says that he finds “face-to-face meeting rewarding,” in his own words, they challenge one’s morals and help shape ethics. Those who met him said they were pleasantly surprised by his demeanour and his thorough understanding of development issues. He praised Nepal for making remarkable progress in MDGs and singled out female health volunteers repeatedly for their contribution.
He said that getting the ground work right is vital for development and that Nepal was currently in the middle of that process. “Once you get that going, that’s when all the opportunity opens up and you can speed up. The process works also on economic growth because Nepal, after all, is situated between two big markets: China and India.”
In an interview with The Kathmandu Post Crown Prince Haakon told John Narayan Parajuli on Thursday afternoon at the conclusion of his visit that an inclusive growth was very important and that addressing inequalities was crucial to creating stability. He said that what he saw in Nepal made him very optimistic about Nepal’s future.

How a Model should be?

Provision of sanitary facilities, effective disposal of solid waste.
Protect the environment by planting trees, kitchen gardens and smoke free chulo.

Ensuring the health facilities and campaigning.
Ensuring social security by supporting orphans, widows, mentally retarded peoples and Senior citizens.
Eradicating untouchability & establishing community harmony.
Youth development.
Sustainable agriculture and economic development.

Regarding those tips I think we are in the first step for insuring our goal. It will takes more than five years for announce the Model Village Project. The key for Model Village Project defined by this program are:

1. Basics Needs:
Road facilities
Sanitation
Water Distribution
Electric facilities
            Energy Saving
All those will do with using the funds from the Model Project and from other various related government sectors.
2. Education
Every child has right for their education. This is not just a slogan. It has become a reality in ADWAN's project areas. It is ensured that all the children of age from 3 to higher are attending school. The major key for education is well infrastructure development is more important to give children a good learning environment. Good flooring, paintings with moral messages in the school compound wall, racks for the library and computer facilities are giving children a support to learn. The Model project and the local people themselves will ensure that none of the children drop out from schools is the major key for announce the Model Village. This will made possible by the coordination between the Project implementer, local people and the school.
Following are the programs to be lunched for make a Model Village:
  • Education to School Children
  • Women empowerment programs
  • Entrepreneur Development programs
  • Agriculture Development programs
  • Youth Development programs
  • Meditation and other motivational programs
This will help for the sustainable social and economic development and ensures community participation and contribution.

3. Health
Ø  Sustainable Medical care for the village people.
Ø  Maternity and Productive Health care.
Ø  Dental care facilities.
Ø  Environmental health
4. Women Empowerment
ADWAN has been organized Women as Self Help Groups and some women have been trained for producing various small scale livelihood productions like candle making, incense making, Bag weaving, Cutting and Sewing, Animal keeping, micro retail shop and  smoke free Stove making. The Women Empowerment and skills give confidence themselves is most important key for make the Village Model. More than that, they are taking up added responsibility in the family and the village development

5. Social Justice

We know caste system still prevails in Nepal. It may not be much visible in cities. But the caste conflicts and discrimination based on caste live in villages. To address this issue and to prove that even in villages people of different casts could live together friendly and peacefully is also major key for make Village Model. At first,
This training held in the topic of insects, Medicare, Watering and Dipping. The participation was not credible in this training due to the Dashain festival. Only 23 from Group "A" and 22 participants from Group "B" were presented. The training was fruitful and interesting. A Pest technician from District Agriculture was presented in this training for better understood to participants about the beneficial and non-beneficial pests. He launch the training in the better environment with full of joy.
On Tomato
Overview
Common pest problems on tomato plants include hornworms, aphids, flea beetles, and stink bugs. Diseases such as crown rot, Fusarium wilt, cucumber mosaic virus and early blight can also plague the home tomato grower. Organic pest control sprays are effective both as a preventative and when problems develop. They are easy to make with household components. Companion planting is also an organic preventative method of pest control.
Organic Insect Spray
Companion Planting
Companion planting is most important and easy natural method for tomato plant problems. Nature provides good solutions for many insect pest problems. Some plants give out smell which causes insects to stay away. Borage is a good companion plant for tomato hornworms. Garlic's smell repels aphids. Marigolds planted near tomatoes discourage whiteflies.
Beneficial Insects
Organic pest control sprays do not cause injury to children or pets that come into contact with them. They leave no chemical residue on the tomatoes. Many gardeners prefer to make their own bug sprays. It is easy to do with common household components. There are many guidelines for organic sprays to control tomato pests. Garlic and pepper is an all-purpose bug spray for common tomato plant problems such as aphids and hornworms. It's strongly keeps many insects away and it kills ones that are already on the plants. This spray stops mildew too.
Ladybugs, praying mantis, and lacewings are known as "beneficial" and they are a very effective organic pest control for tomato problems. They eat the insects which chew and destroy tomato plants, such a flea beetles and aphids. Ladybugs and praying mantis can be purchased at most Agro-vet centers. We can also attract these kinds of beneficial insects by using a sugar-water spray on the plants.
Cauliflower and Cabbage.
Growing Broccoli at the same time as minimizing pest problems will mean following some sort of crop rotation plan. This simply means not growing vegetables of the same family in the same piece of earth year after year. It encourages pest build up in the soil.
Cabbage Root Fly can be a problem so use protective discs at the base of the growing Cauliflower as they lay their eggs in the soil at this point and then they give the little root fly deep down and feed on the roots.
Also cover with gardening rip off when the plants are young. Rip off is a great friend to the gardener, it allows rain and light through but insulates against cold and discourage pests.
Caterpillars:
Cabbage looper moths, mainly fly at dusk and are brown with a light silver spot on each main wing. They lay many single dome-shaped eggs on the underside of leaves. The eggs hatch around 3 days and the caterpillars move by arching their middle or looping along.
Clubroot: This cauliflower's problem is caused by a fungus in the soil. Growing plants from seed helps, as most clubroot fungus is introduced from brought in plants with infected roots. Clubroot symptoms are wilted, discolored leaves, and when you pull out a plant, its roots will be a suffering. It's no
Rootfly Root fly's eggs.
Watch for these as they tend to like to invite themselves to dinner cabbage's leaves. Your plants are dying if caterpillars eat out the growing leafs. Also as well as option of caterpillars off, has organic solution called BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis). By dusting or spraying this every 7-10 days, it controls caterpillars, especially cabbage worm. There are also two types of cabbage white butterflies — large and small. Both types overwinter as pupae and in springtime they emerge as white butterflies, mate and lay their eggs which hatch into leaf chewing caterpillars about 2 weeks later.
The large cabbage white butterfly caterpillar lays a cluster of yellow eggs usually on the underside of a leaf, and the more common and destructive small white butterfly lays single white eggs.
wonder the plant looks sick, as the roots simply are unable to do what roots normally do. There is no effective organic treatment for clubroot fungus once it gets, so there are not many options unfortunately. Most importantly avoid planting plants in the same space for another 4 years at least, and from then on, make sure you rotate crops leaving three years in between crops. If your soil is acidic, add sea green at least 2 months before planting, because clubroot prefers acid soil conditions.
Mildew: One of the frustrating pests and diseases is mildew. It takes a lot to kill a plant, but it will if it gets out of hand. Springtime with milder, but damp weather encourages mildew. Downy mildew: is the most common powdery scrap, mostly on the leaves and new shoots at first. Downy mildew will invade the plant's insides eventually, and lethally.
Taking Care of Plants
 After-care is very much part of learning how to grow vegetable - but fortunately it's easy:
Carefully prepare around the plants to keep weeds down.
 Protect from those horrible birds - they love the young seedlings. Put bamboo in the ground with upturned plant pots on top. Cover net over and secure with rope on the ground.
 Water regularly especially in dry conditions.
 From time to time feed the growing liquid fertilizer.
 As the plants get taller you may need to stake the plants.
 Re-firm the cauliflower plants if they have become loosened by wind or frost.
At last the training was finished successfully. I want to share my warm thanks to all participants, trainers, program helpers and especially to EDWON family.

PROPOSAL ON "SMOKE FREE STOVE" FOR INDIVIDUALS

If you are lucky in life, you can sometimes solve difficult problems by making one major change. In Nepal, the traditional cooking stoves impact the family, community, and environment in dangerous ways.  Stoves are usually constructed inside the house without chimneys.  The women spend many hours a day cooking for their families and breathing invariable smoke. Young children are exposed all day while their mothers cook. Health clinics in Nepal report a steady stream of patients with respiratory illness, coughs, asthma and related problems. In addition, the traditional stoves were never designed with efficiency in mind so they consume large amounts of firewood. Environmental damage and deforestation is highly increasing in Nepal. ADWAN works with saving women group members to build improved stoves in needed communities. By utilizing designs such as the “Breaks Stove”, improvements in health and well-being of families can be seen almost immediately.  These stoves eliminate the health risk by taking the smoke out of the house with a chimney as well as minimize the amount of firewood needed by up to 65%. The cost of building a break Stove is US$12.00 including materials and logistics. Please consider an individual donation to help a family in need and save the poor women from various diseases. Thanks to remarkable help for real change.

REPORT ON IPM PHASE III

 REPORT ON IPM, PHASE-III
INTRODUCTION
This workshop was held for the purpose of training in the principles and importance of Integrated Pest Management and Integrated Vegetable Management. Increasing importance and education to the farmers about IPM is most important part for IVM.  The training will spirit out the basic IPM principles for presenting farmers. Materials for training are provided by ADWAN in support of EDWON. At the conclusion; I created lists of the various activities as report, regarding IPM Phase III.
Theory Class:
1.      Discuss about field preparation
2.      Discuss about field measurement
3.      Discuss about Pad measurement
4.      Discuss about mixing fertilizer
5.      Discuss about take out the plants from the nursery
6.      Discuss about method of planting the plants
7.      Discuss about the caring, watering and Medicare for the plants

Practical Class:
It was various difficulties to do practical class due to the raining. It took three days for wait for the good weather.
1.    After two days weather came better and start plough the field. We must plough the field two times for make soil better and women start to through the wastage from the field and participants dig the field again by mixing fertilizer as the instruction of theory class. It took more than one and half hours.
2.   As the discussion in theory class the whole land was divided into two parts. The measurement of partition lands has 14 meters length and 11 meters breadth and a meter path in the middle of the land
 3. As the discussion in theory class the whole land was dividing into two parts. One part for group "A" and another one is for group "B". And divided those plots into 12 plots and divided the main group into four small groups for easier to works as 3 plots per group. One plot for IPM, other one for Old farming style and last one for examination. In examination we planted the plant using with Urea only, with potash only, with DAP only, with animal dunks only and without any fertilizer. This will shows us differences between organic or chemical fertilizer. That means it helps farmers to be clear the organic fertilizer can give growth same as chemical.

4.      As advice of the trainer the members mixed the half fertilizer from whole in the field and dig again. They kept half fertilizer for keep into the hole for planting seed. They make the 10 inches diameter and 5 inch deep hole in the differences of 20 inches and they kept 2 kgs fertilizer in it and mixed with soil perfectly.
5.      Some participant went to the nursery for takeout the plant for planting to the field. The plants takeout system was different from traditional style. Firstly they made small weapons from bamboo and deep it inside root of plant and takeout with soil. This is a new idea we learnt about takeout plant from nursery.
6.      Participants planting the seed plant as learnt in theory class. The already made the hole, put fertilizer and mixed it well for plant planting. The trainer taught them that deep the plant's root same as in nursery. Don't deep more than in nursery because the stem will not support the soil and can die. So, all did as her instruction.
7. The trainer advised to all participants for coming to the field once a day role by role. The group leaders are responsible for send a member daily for caring, watering and Medicare. In this part the trainer will be responsible for caring the plant and teaches them about the medicating.
Field Discussion:
What is a pest?
Ø  Insects, vertebrates, pathogens, weeds. Pest definition often confused with insect only definition.

What is IPM? And what are the problems?
Ø  IPM is flexible in definition when it comes with packages of information or implementation.

Problems
Ø      Human safety
Ø      Environmental pollution
Ø      Mistake definitions of IPM
Ø      Ignorance of real issues

MEJOR WORDS:
Ø   IPM is not organic farming; it is just taught for organic farming, be care farmers and public can become confuse.
Ø      Monitoring is most important.
Ø      Safety must be integrate with the IPM practices, especially suitable safe clothing in hot climates.
Ø      Equipment has to be uses carefully.
Ø      Why and how to share IPM concepts to other farmers who are not attending this training.

 Question from Kamal:
1: What are the profits of the program?
Farmers become expert to the farming methods and can standing as experts. The chemical’s using will decrease and come up fresh and organic growth. Risk resistance will minimize. Simple and sustainable farming will establish.

2: Can you explain briefly about IPM systems in Nepal?
Ø       Demand of IPM is still low in Nepal.
Ø      The fundamentals are still not established.
Ø       lack of idea in organic farming or non-chemical farming
Ø       Most farms are small, simple and cover by stones/hilly
Ø       Lack of public demand for safe food
Ø       Not be aware on environmental health

General comments:
1.      Good participation by members.
2.      Overall the training was fruitful and very good.
3.      Good interactive discussion.
4.      Very good chance to gain knowledge and experiences about the IPM.
5.      One nonparticipant person was very negative about the IPM training.

Conclusion:
Reality cannot be change, the goals depend on work.
Ø       Farmers still using old method in farming.  Reasons are- lack of training, lack of equipment, old planning and policy.

The involvement of participants was outstanding. The participants' participatory and enthusiasm will be supporting part for success of IPM. The discussion and practical class make able to participants to identify the important and fundamentals things of IPM. The evaluation of the training and taking photos of IPM done by Kamal Babu Pariyar.
